Holy Bikram, Matman!

(Day 34 – 332 To Go) February 3, 2008

I went to my first bikram yoga class today.  I spent much of the class doing my best to avoid vomiting or passing out.  There were about thirty in the class, and wow was the studio hot.  I was the only “gravitationally challenged” person there, which is okay.

I went to breakfast after the class with one of the owners of the studio, my friend Patrick. Patrick asked me what I thought the unique challenges were, facing “fat people.”  Patrick explained that he was considering offering a “Yoga for Fat People” class at Yoga Energi.  I said that one challenge was that the only time I ever look at myself in the mirror below my chest is in a yoga class, and that’s a full ninety minutes of torture.  Another challenge would be having one of the very fit/slender yoga instructors teaching a class full of fat people.  It just wouldn’t fly.

I suggested that they call the class, “Yoga for Weight Loss,” and that they have a heavy person teach it.   Patrick then invited me to become a yoga instructor and teach that class.  I accepted his invitation.  I’ll keep you posted on my progress!
