Who knew that growing your own sprouts could be so fun? As I watched my sprouts grow from tiny seeds, I was taken back to my kindergarten class with Miss Price (1970) where we incubated fertilized chicken eggs and watched the chicks hatch and grow. We also had a bunch of caterpillars in our classroom, and fed them leaves from the trees outside. We observed their cocoon making and their emergence as butterflies. It was amazing.

Growing sprouts in a jar in my kitchen has been great fun. I started with alfalfa and clover seeds. After days and days of rinsing and watching they’re ready to eat! The instructions I read on the sprouting jar said to keep them in a 70 degree dark place, so I kept them in the kitchen cupboard. The sprouts looked a bit anemic after they’d grown, so the last couple of days I kept them on the window sill in the kitchen. The tiny leaves are a deep green, and I feel much better eating them like that.
